Town ZIP Code
Background
The Town of Frederick currently does not have its own unique ZIP Code, which has created several challenges for our community. The ZIP Code system, instituted in the 1960s, is used by the Postal Service to sort and deliver mail, but its impact extends far beyond that. Economic developers, insurers, emergency responders, and various other sectors rely heavily on ZIP Codes for a variety of critical functions. While we recognize and respect the USPS's primary role in ensuring effective mail delivery, the broader implications of sharing a ZIP Code with neighboring areas are significant.
Towns and cities without their own unique ZIP Codes often face a range of negative consequences. These include reduced economic development opportunities, loss of sales tax revenue, elevated insurance premiums, and complications with tax remittance and commercial licensing. Additionally, public safety is often compromised when emergency responders experience delays or confusion, resulting in slower response times. This is a particular concern for our community, as there have been instances where first responders have mistakenly gone to the wrong streets due to ZIP Code issues.
To further highlight the public safety impacts of outdated ZIP code boundaries, both Frederick Police Chief Todd Norris and Frederick-Firestone Fire District Fire Chief Jeremy Young have provided formal letters of support. Their letters detail how ZIP code inaccuracies create operational challenges and pose real risks to emergency response within our community.

- Why doesn’t Frederick have its own ZIP Code?
-
Frederick, does not have its own ZIP code because it shares ZIP Codes with Longmont (80504) and Erie (80516) based on outdated USPS routing. This sharing leads to issues such as lost tax revenue, delays in emergency response, and confusion for businesses. The U.S. Postal Service has recognized the need for unique ZIP codes for smaller communities, and there are ongoing efforts to address this issue.
- Why is this a problem?
-
The absence of a unique ZIP code can lead to several issues, including:
• Delayed mail delivery: Communities may experience longer delivery times for important documents, medications and packages.
• Mis-delivery of mail: ZIP code misalignment can result in mail being sent to the wrong address, leading to confusion and potential delays.
• Delayed emergency response: In emergencies, having a unique ZIP code can help ensure that emergency services can reach the correct location quickly.
• Local tax revenue issues: Unique ZIP codes can affect local tax revenue by ensuring that taxes are collected and distributed to the correct town or cities.
• Loss of community identity: Communities may feel less distinct and may lose their unique identity if they do not have a dedicated ZIP code.
- How much sales tax is Frederick losing?
-
An estimated $1.5 million each year is misallocated to neighboring communities.
- Who benefits from a unique ZIP Code?
-
Everyone—residents, businesses, first responders, and the town as a whole.
- What is the Town doing about it?
-
Frederick is working with the USPS and Congressional Legislators to establish a unique ZIP Code for the Town. H.R 3095 is currently in congress addressing the issue.

In Frederick, over 4,000 households and businesses are assigned to the Longmont ZIP Code (80504), and more than 2,000 households are assigned the Erie ZIP Code (80516). This situation has the potential to cause a conservative estimate of $1.5 million in lost sales tax revenue, as purchases made by Frederick residents are allocated outside our town. The Town is in favor of our current 80530 ZIP Code to be inclusive of all households and businesses within Frederick boundaries.
Having a unique ZIP Code would provide numerous benefits, particularly in ensuring that the sales taxes paid by our residents are directed back into our community. It would also play a crucial role in helping Frederick build the infrastructure needed to accommodate future growth and meet the demands of our residents.

How You Can Help
For Frederick to have the greatest chance of obtaining an independent ZIP Code, the U.S. Congress must enact legislation to officially consolidate the Town’s ZIP Code boundaries. The Town encourages residents, businesses, and community groups to submit letters or testimonials in support of the Town having its own independent ZIP Code.
