As 2011 nears its end, The Town of Frederick Staff reflects on accomplishments that moved the community forward in 2011. Though it was difficult to narrow the field down to ten, we hope you enjoy this list, as voted on by Town of Frederick Staff. Clearly, the community of Frederick has a lot to look forward to in 2012!
10. Indoor Shooting Range Agreement – The Frederick Police Department formed an agreement with the City of Longmont for the use of their new state-of-the-art indoor shooting range. Frederick will be the only Tri-Town police department utilizing this unique range which gives the opportunity to shoot all year around without any weather concerns. This new training facility will allow officers to shoot at several different distances and moving targets as well as provide a place to hold classroom discussions. This is an outstanding opportunity for the department to increase officer training ability.
9. Frederick Police Department vehicle replacement program - In 2011, the Town established their first-ever vehicle replacement program. Guidelines were written and approved for replacing police vehicles with excessive mileage. The basic plan is to rotate a vehicle every four years, with approximately 100,000 miles. In doing so, the Town will be relieved of a vehicle that is no longer under warranty and typically has increasing maintenance costs, while ensuring that there are still an adequate number of well-operating vehicles available for officers to continue keeping the community safe.
8. Working with Other Governments – The Town of Frederick continues to work well with its neighbors. In 2011, an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) was put in place with the City of Longmont to formally establish agreed upon development regulations to preserve wildlife in the area near Boulder Creek as well as annexation and master planning agreements. Another IGA with St. Vrain Valley School District was updated with current development practices. Frederick is also currently working with Firestone to update their IGA and hope to complete it in early 2012. Frederick and Dacono partnered together on multiple projects this year, including fallen tree branch removal and building inspections.
7. Community Events Going Strong – Frederick added a new successful event to its ever popular lineup this year with the Frederick in Flight June 25-26 that saw hot air balloons fill the sky on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Frederick in Flight joins the annual Fishing Clinic, Miners Memorial Day Celebration, and Treelighting Celebration to round out a full year of fun for the community.
6. Bella Rosa Trail – Staff obtained a grant to design and construct a trail connection from the Legacy Trail along Colorado Blvd. west to a trail in Moore Farm using a route along the north and west side of the Bella Rosa Golf Course. The design is complete and construction is anticipated to begin shortly after the first of 2012.
5. Facebook page – The Town of Frederick created a social media presence in 2011 with the creation of a Facebook page and Twitter account. These new outlets provide the Town a way to reach out to a different section of the population than traditional sources reach, helping the Town continue its mission of providing clear and open communication with its residents.
4. The Frederick Market – The inaugural season of Frederick’s farmers market saw a total of 30 vendors and over 4,000 visitors, far outreaching the expectations of a first year market as outlined by the Colorado Farmers Market Association (CFMA). This community asset provides an outlet for residents to purchase farm fresh, locally sourced products and handmade crafts while creating an additional meeting place for residents to socialize and build a stronger community.
3. New Businesses – Several new businesses put down roots in Frederick this year, including Santiago’s, NAPA, Falcon Environmental, An Artist’s Vision and Discount Tire & Services, to name a few. Look for more new businesses to spring up in the near future including 7-11 and Indian Peaks Medical Center.
2. New Homes – The Town of Frederick issued 113 single family permits in four different subdivisions this year, more than Firestone, Dacono and Longmont combined. 113 single family permits account for roughly 342 new residents. Who knew the 2010 Census would be outdated so quickly?
1. Intersection Improvements at SH 52 and WCR 11 (Silver Birch Blvd) - Engineering Staff worked with Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to get FASTER Funding from the State of Colorado for the design and construction of improvements to the intersection of SH52 & WCR11. Staff also proposed an alternate design including a left turn for southbound Silver Birch that resulted in a much higher capacity intersection and better level of service. Since CDOT is constrained in the amount of FASTER funds that can be spent on anything other than strictly safety improvements, the Frederick Town Board approved spending up to $30,000.00 for these additional improvements. It will better serve the increased traffic that will come with the completion of the new Frederick High School and the hospital improvements planned for this area. Final construction costs were just over $1.7 million by CDOT and under $24,000 for Frederick.
