Santa Cops -This community effort begins in the fall and culminates just before the Christmas holiday with the providing of gifts to needy children. In Frederick, that means that police officers, citizens and family members identify children and families with children that need help with Christmas. The families that qualify for this attention will be in financial distress and lack the ability to do much for the children at Christmas time. Fundraising is a year round effort that involves many parts of the community, such as private businesses, individual citizens, and civic organizations. Nominations are received at the police department in the fall until mid-November. A task force of local elves then goes on a shopping trip to obtain as many of the requested gifts as possible. This effort is usually highly successful. On a Saturday in December, the children are then brought by their families to the police station to meet with Santa Claus and receive their wrapped Christmas presents. _____________________________________________________ |
