The Town of Frederick is proud to announce the Old Town Hall has earned a place on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. The official designation took place on January 26, 2012, in recognition of this property’s contribution to the heritage of the State of Colorado. The Old Town Hall served as the recorder of coal mining transactions, municipal court, jail, record keeper and primary hub for town government from 1908 until 1976. It was then moved two blocks west to where it resides now in Crist Park and is currently used as a mining museum that is open during the Miners Day Celebration and is a stop on the elementary school tours that take place in May.
“How exciting for the Town of Frederick to have our former Town Hall designated as a landmark site,” said Mayor Eric Doering. “The efforts of our own Historic Preservation Commission were instrumental in securing the designation that will allow us to continue to preserve and enhance the facility. It is a special way to remember our history as a community and the many visitors that tour the facility will be further enhanced by this designation.”
The Colorado State Register of Historic Properties is a listing of the state’s significant cultural resources deserving of preservation for the future education and enjoyment of residents and visitors. Properties listed in the State Register include individual buildings, structures, objects, districts and historic and archaeological sites. Over 1,800 individual properties and districts are currently listed in the State Register. The State Register program is administered by the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) within History Colorado, the Colorado Historical Society. History Colorado maintains an official list of all properties included in the State Register. Those listed in the State Register may be eligible for investment tax credits or for grants from the State Historical Fund (SHF), another program of History Colorado.
Historic Preservation Commissioner Sean Scott began working on the process in early 2011, submitting the necessary materials for nomination last September. He went before the Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board last month and the Old Town Hall received their recommendation to the Colorado Historical Society for approval. The final approval was given January 26, 2012 and the Old Town Hall was officially listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. The Town will plan to install a plaque recognizing the designation in conjunction with the 10th Annual Miners Day Celebration on September 15th.
